7 common signs and symptoms of acid reflux

Do you ever find yourself feeling a burning or uncomfortable sensation in your stomach? Well, we all are very familiar with the condition of acid reflux. The condition is very common, and millions of people are affected by it, at least once a month. Also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, the discomfort caused can make it very difficult to undertake regular activities.

Acid reflux is not a very serious condition; however, its symptoms should not be ignored. They indicate that the esophagus is inflamed due to excessive acid in the stomach.

7 Common Signs And Symptoms Of Acid Reflux
When this happens too often, the lining of the esophagus can be damaged by the stomach acid and there may be abnormal bleeding. Moreover, it may lead to alterations in the cells of the esophagus over time, and this can lead to the development of cancer.

Here are some of the most common signs and symptoms that you may experience with acid reflux:

Heartburn – Heartburn feels like there is a burning sensation in the areas from the stomach to the middle of the chest. The discomfort moves upwards from the stomach, and this kind of burning can be quite severe.

This symptom is also known as acid indigestion, and the pain can soon move into the throat. While the name heartburn may make you wonder if the heart is affected, it does not.

Dyspepsia – Dyspepsia is another common condition experienced due to acid reflux. It is a syndrome that is characterized by discomfort in the stomach. It causes several things such as feeling nauseous after eating a meal, feeling full or bloated despite not overeating, incessant burping and pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen.

Regurgitation – Regurgitation is usually experienced as a symptom of severe acid reflux. It is caused when there is an excess amount of acid in the back of the mouth. The condition is extremely discomforting and leads to a sour or bitter taste in the mouth. In some cases, there may also be “wet burps” that are experienced constantly.

Bloody and black stools – Acid reflux can cause the stool to be bloody or black. There may be traces seen in the stool as a result of bleeding. While you do not have to be too worried about this factor, it is essential to bring it to the notice of the doctor immediately.

Weight loss – Weight loss is another sign or symptom of acid reflux that is rarely experienced. There may be a drop-in your weight suddenly, without an apparent reason. While this symptom is also common for several other conditions, it should be taken seriously when noticed.

Dysphagia – Dysphagia is a condition wherein you begin to feel that there is some food stuck in the throat. While it is only a feeling, it makes it difficult to eat foods due to the unusual feeling that is felt. You may not be able to comfortably consume foods you regularly eat.

Hiccups – Hiccups are another common sign of acid reflux. They do not stop despite sipping water or eating foods.

Acid reflux is often experienced at night. The signs and symptoms are most likely to occur after the consumption of a heavy meal, when bending over to lift a heavy object, or when lying down with the back on the surface. The level of pain experienced with conditions vary, however, the pain does not indicate the seriousness of acid reflux.
